Shop & Support Moms - Jennifer Hilton - Hilton's Gifts and Decor

I'm really excited that I found Jennifer Hilton's awesome creations from Hilton's Gifts and Decor. She and her husband are a great team, working together to create beautiful signs and other items for the house and for weddings, as well as take care of their sweet girl.

1. How did you start your business? Why did you want your own business? When did you start your business?
Our Business started in 2015 when we were cleaning out a room that had all of our old wedding decorations stored away and we didn't know what to do with them. My husband had started getting into woodworking just about the same time two of our friends were getting married.  They wanted him to make a sign for seating but didn't want to keep it. That got us both thinking about renting out props for weddings. From there we started getting requests to make wine racks and signs.

2. Why was owning a business a perfect situation for you and your family? 
Starting a business together was important for us for many reasons. 

One, we both love to work together and create things that make others happy. The most important was that in October we found out that we were having a baby, and by having our own business it allows us more time with our daughter.  It gives us a great opportunity to raise her in a creative environment, all while teaching her responsibility and the value of hard work.

3. What does your business specialize in? What's your favorite product? How'd you come up with the name?
Our business specializes in wooden gifts, home decor and prop rentals. Our favorite items are our bottle openers and our "Home" signs that feature the State of Maine in place of the "O". The business name is our last name and what we specialize in.

4. What do you love best about working for yourself?
What we love best is that this business has allowed myself to only have to work part time so that I can be home for our daughter. Hopefully as we grow as a business it will allow my husband to be home more with her as well.

5. When working, When do you work in the day/evening? What's your process for working? Things you do daily, a routine?
My husband works on the business during the day, before he goes to his full time job. I work around the baby's schedule depending on what we are doing. It could be during early mornings, naps and after she has gone to bed. Sometimes I am able to work on things when she is up when it can be done between her needs.

6. Take me step by step through working with customers. Do you do anything special or unique, wrapping, specials, etc.?
My husband and I research trends on social media and come up with projects, designs and colors. After that, we make the product and critique things as needed. We often get special orders where we have the customer either send a picture of what they would like or tell specific directions on how they would like the product made. Once we have designed a special order we do a template so they can see what their product will look like. Once we have the okay we begin building.  One benefit with a custom order is when we finish the project and post a photo of it on social media, others see it and request the same thing.

7. What is your success rate? What do you think customers would say about your work, shop?
We are a new business and growing fast. I feel as though all of our customers like our product and the quality. We do not have a physical store, but just launched an online store on our website.  We are also just getting into the wholesale market and hope to grow our business in that direction. As far as the prop rentals have gone, it has been word of mouth.  So far, every wedding we have done, the customers have been extremely happy with what we have provided.  

8. Why do you think people should shop in your store, and why should they support moms who work for themselves?
I think people should shop with us because we can do custom orders and make the things that they want the way they want them. We do quality work, we are local and our entire product line is hand made.  We try to get most of our supplies from other local dealers and businesses. Most of the wood we use is reclaimed and repurposed materials that would have been just thrown away.  

They should support moms who work for themselves because it helps that person to support their family and allow them to be home with their children.

9. What are your items to sell?
We sell a wide assortment of product, which is continually growing.  We sell handmade home decor signs and gifts made from mostly reclaimed and recycled wood.  We do have several items that are made from newly milled wood to give it a more modern feel.  We try to keep up with the current trends of rustic, industrial and modern.  

10. How does your business allow you to be a great mother? Our business allows me to be a great mother because I am able to be home for our daughter and be able to best attend to her needs. My husband's full time job is very demanding and his schedule often changes. By having our own business I can be there for whatever our daughter needs whether she is sick or she needs to go to a doctor's appointment. By having our own business I can change my hours if she needs my attention more.




11. What do you think would surprise readers to know about you? We try to use reclaimed local products that have history to them. How cool is it that people have bottle openers made from wood that once was used as a shelf in a local hardware store that no longer exists?  Our antique door backdrop rental is made from doors that came from a house in York that was over 100 years old.  My husband was able to salvage them before the house was torn down and burned to make way for new construction.  My husband loves history and takes any opportunity he can to obtain materials from buildings that will soon be gone forever.  

12. What is the coolest thing you've ever experienced as part of working with this business? The coolest thing we have experienced doing this business is making other customers happy. Whether it's a wine rack to hang in their dinning room for a birthday gift or a custom sign made for an anniversary present; it's the look on their face and the excitement they have when they receive our product.

13. What is one of your favorite gifts to give someone for the holidays? My favorite gifts to give for the holidays are things hat have meaning and sentimental value. Whether it be the materials used, the product itself or a word that has meaning.  We try to bring those principles into our product.

14. How many kids do you have? Give us one word to describe them.
We have a four month old daughter named Koralynn. If I had to choose one word to describe her it would be joyful. She is always happy, smiling, fun and brings so much joy to my husband and I.
