1. How did you start your business? Why did you want your own business? When did you start your business?
I had worked as a stylist in the same salon for twelve years and I was feeling burnt out. I thought my love for this industry was fading. When I really evaluated my situation I realized that I just didn’t have anymore room to grow creatively and I craved the freedom to do things my way. I decided I would rather rent a space at a salon then take on the responsibility of having employees. So I started looking for a booth rental and found a great fit not only for myself but for my clientele at Timeless Salon and Spa in Dover. As of now I have been in business for two years and I love every minute of it.
2. Why was this type of business a perfect situation for you and your family?
I started working for myself shortly before becoming pregnant. It's was really great to have the ability to set my own hours throughout my pregnancy and having that flexibility as my son has grown. Most of my colleagues are also working mothers running businesses, so i have this amazing built in support system!
3. What does your business specialize in? What's your favorite product or thing you offer?
I specialize in cuts and color. I took some advanced education on balayage and ombre last year. So right now I'm really enjoying using those techniques to create some amazing fall colors for my clients.
4. What do you love best about working in this business?
I love my clients! I love changing up their looks to help emphasize the natural beauty that we all possess. I love sending them away knowing that they feel like a million bucks. I love knowing that they are wearing my work out there in the world. If you buy a designer shirt and you really love it you may wear it once a week. My clients are wearing my designs every day!
5. When do you work in the day/evening? What's your routine or schedule?
I work behind the chair Monday 9:30-2, & 3-8, & 9-3. I do all my bookkeeping, supply ordering, and education at night or during my days off. I am pretty much on call to answer client's texts as they need me.
6. Take me step by step through a workday.
My work days are pretty routine. Getting up, getting everyone ready and fed, and getting my husband out the door. Playtime, naptime, with some chores thrown in. Then I drop my son at my parents and head to work. I book my schedule very tight so I can see as many clients as possible without making anyone feel rushed.
7. What is your success rate?
Even though the responsibility of working for yourself can sometimes be daunting, I have been able to retain and build my clientele and meet the demands of being a new mom, so at this point feel I am successful.
8. Why do you think it's important for moms to find the right salon or stylist?
Before I answer number 8. I want to talk about what the right stylist means.
A stylist should be able to listen and collaborate with you to find a style that not only suits your style, face shape, and skin tone but also something that you can recreate daily. The right stylist should be asking how much time do you have to spend doing your hair and what your goals are. I think it's important for working and stay at home moms to have the right stylist because when you feel happy and confident in your look that can really set the tone for how your day goes. (That doesn't always mean you are in full hair and makeup! You can feel great in a ponytail) I also think our children look to us to see how we present ourselves to the world.
9. What are your favorite homemade or company sellers to buy from?
I have a few mom friends that rent retail space at some local stores in Dover and Somersworth. If I'm looking for something unique, I usually start there.
I also have been really into buying kid’s toys/gear from the Facebook resale groups. I love that you are getting what you need for a great price, buying from other moms, and reducing your footprint.
10. How does your business allow you to be a great mother?
Having some time out of the house makes me value my time at home with my family even more. Again, working for myself my time is my own. I can arrange my schedule around my family's needs.
11. What do you think would surprise readers to know about you?
Sometimes I feel like I get more than I give. My clients are all so amazing and unique. I love learning from them. I recently had a client educate me about Thorium and how it may be a game changer for powering our planet.
12. What is the coolest thing you've ever experienced as part of working with this business?
I have had a few clients jump up and hug me because the feel so beautiful when we are finished. That really leaves me on cloud 9 for the rest of the day.
13. What is one of your favorite gifts to give someone for the holidays?
I like sending Stonewall Kitchen pancake mix to my out of state friends and family.
14. How many kids do you have?
I have one 10 month old boy named Phoenix. My word to describe him right now would be Explorer!
