expert mama - Meredith Gay - CHILDRENS' RETAIL STORE

Thank you to Meredith Gay, our Expert Mama Childrens' Retail Store worker. She has some fantastic, simple ideas for making your shopping experience easier and why she enjoys having some time to herself working out of the home. Such a cutie little man she has, I really appreciated her sharing her experience. Thank you, Meredith!

1. Where do you work?
I work at hanna Andersson in the Kittery outlets.

2. What do you like about your job?
What I like about my job is getting to see all the kids that come in and the diversity in the families that come in as well!

We have so many different types of families...we have families of 2 mommies or 2 daddies...we have families that have adopted children...it's really interesting to just see the types of families that come in!

3. What is challenging about your job?
The challenging part about my job, to be completely honest is when parents come in and shop with their children and the children just clearly don't want anything to do with the shopping and they are throwing fits and screaming at the top of their lungs.

Most parents will tell their children that if they are going to throw a fit, they are going to put all of the clothes back and leave. Half the parents that come into the store don't actually do it!

After their kids are throwing a fit, they reward them with ice cream or something. I can handle the screaming children but it's challenging to listen to a parent say they are going to leave and then they stay and shop for another 30 minutes.

4. How many kids do you have and what are their names?
I have one little nugget & his name is Riley Thompson Gay

5. How do you balance work and family?
Honestly, it's so hard to balance work and family because I send him to daycare three days a week and then he's with some of my family on the other 2 days that I work.

I'm a single mom, which makes it even harder. I've made it this far without any issues and I continue to work as hard as I can for my son to make sure he gets anything and everything that he will ever need!

Balancing work and my son are hard, but I strive to make sure that I can be with him as much as possible!

6. What are the tough parts about working out of the home as a mom?
The hard part about working away from the home as a mom would be not being able to keep him on a strict schedule because even if I write down a schedule for whoever is watching him, babies are so unpredictable and sometimes he will nap 2 times a day and sometimes he will nap 3 times a day! It's also hard to just be away from him in general! I hate being away from him and I'm always texting whoever is watching him to check on him!

7. What are the good things about working out of the home as a mom?
The good thing about working away from home as a mom is that it gives me a break from everything!

As much as I love being with my son constantly, sometimes you just need a break!

8. What advice do you have for parents going clothing shopping?

The advice I have for parents going shopping for clothes is, if you can help it...don't bring your kids if they just have absolutely no interest and are tired and gonna get cranky! It doesn't bother us that are working in the store but it makes it harder on yourself to get stuff done!

The good thing about our store, is you can buy multiple sizes if you're not sure what size to buy because we have no time limit for returns or exchanges! It makes it hard on the parent to shop. I have encountered many moms that need so much stuff for their child but they just can't stand to shop anymore with a screaming child!

9. Is it easier for moms to shop with or without kids? What's your advice?
Like I said in the previous question, it's definitely easier for a parent to shop without their child, unless the child enjoys shopping and is a good helper!

Our store is pretty great because we have a train table where the children can play, which helps the parents out a lot so they can shop and their child can play!

10. What is your advice for which size to purchase... what fits now, or the next size up since they grow fast, etc.?

My advice for which size to buy would be to get the next size up unless you know your child needs clothes for right now! Children grow so fast and you never know what size they are going to be. I would much rather spend money on something that is going to be too big but eventually fit, then buy something that will only fit for a week!
